Cross-stitch vs needlepoint: which should you start?
Start with cross-stitch if you want to stitch a picture from a chart, including one made from your own photo, on soft Aida in stranded cotton, leaving the background bare. Start with needlepoint if you want a sturdy, fully covered piece such as a cushion, worked in tent stitch and wool on stiff canvas, often over a painted design.

What is the difference between cross-stitch and needlepoint?
Cross-stitch is X-shaped stitches on soft gridded fabric, with the background often left bare. Needlepoint is mostly tent stitch on stiff open canvas, usually covering it completely.
| Counted cross-stitch | Needlepoint (canvas work) | |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Aida or evenweave fabric; "count" means stitches per inch | Stiff open-weave canvas (mono, interlock or Penelope); "count" or "mesh" means holes per inch |
| Main stitch | Full cross (two diagonals) | Tent stitch (one diagonal over one intersection); more than 150 canvas stitches exist |
| Typical thread | Six-strand cotton floss, usually 2 strands on 14ct | Tapestry wool (gently twisted 4-ply), soft cotton, pearl cotton, or floss on finer mesh |
| Needle | Blunt tapestry needle | Blunt tapestry needle, sized to the mesh |
| Coverage | Background usually left unstitched | Usually the whole canvas is covered |
| Where the design comes from | A separate counted chart | Often painted or printed on the canvas; charted designs also exist |
| Typical finish | Framed pictures, hoops, cards, samplers | Cushions, chair seats, homewares, framed pieces |
Needlepoint is often called "tapestry", but strictly a tapestry is woven on a loom, while needlepoint is stitched on canvas.

Which is easier and cheaper to start?
Both are beginner-friendly. Needlepoint on a painted canvas needs no chart, while cross-stitch has one stitch to learn but asks you to count.
| Cross-stitch | Needlepoint | |
|---|---|---|
| Learning | One stitch to learn (EGA); you count from a chart | Painted designs need no chart; DMC calls canvas work "really beginner friendly" |
| Starter kit | 14-count Aida (DMC's pick for a first project), floss, blunt needle, hoop, scissors, chart | Canvas, wool or cotton, tapestry needle, frame or stretcher bars, masking tape for the edges |
| Freedom | Any image you can chart | Usually the design you bought |
| What drives cost | The chart, the fabric and how many floss colours | A painted canvas, plus extra thread for the background |
DMC matches needle to canvas, from size 16 for 8–10 count to size 22 for 16–18 count. Prices vary a lot by shop and country, so compare locally.

Which takes longer to finish?
For the same design and size, needlepoint usually means more stitching, because the background is covered too. Hours vary from person to person.
The public Orange Cat sample is 47 × 56 stitches, with 2,179 full crosses in 4 DMC colours, on 14ct Aida with 2 strands.

| Cross-stitch | Full-coverage needlepoint | |
|---|---|---|
| Squares stitched | 2,179 | 2,632 (all of them) |
| Blank squares | 453 stay as bare fabric | 0 |
| Difference | About 21% more stitches |
Each tent stitch is a single diagonal rather than two, so stitch count alone doesn't tell you the hours. Finished size is stitches divided by count (calculated, not stitched):
- 14ct Aida: about 3.4 × 4.0 in (8.5 × 10.2 cm)
- 13-mesh canvas: about 3.6 × 4.3 in (9.2 × 10.9 cm)
- 18-mesh canvas: about 2.6 × 3.1 in (6.6 × 7.9 cm)

Can you stitch either one from your own photo?
Yes for counted cross-stitch. Stitchplot turns a photo into a counted chart with up to 10 DMC-matched colours, for fabric from 11 to 36 count, and shows the finished size and cut size.
Charted needlepoint exists too; DMC says each square in the chart represents one single stitch. A cross-stitch chart still isn't a ready-made needlepoint plan:
- A Stitchplot floss key lists DMC stranded-cotton numbers, while DMC tapestry wool uses its own. On a DMC-branded floss-to-tapestry-wool conversion chart (a guide only), DMC 310 maps to "noir", but DMC 739 and 3854 aren't listed, so you'd match those by eye.
- Stitchplot's thread estimates assume 2 strands of floss on fabric, so they don't apply to wool on canvas.
Stitchplot makes counted cross-stitch charts. It doesn't size charts for needlepoint canvas or estimate wool.

Which projects suit each craft?
| If you want to make… | Pick… |
|---|---|
| A framed pet portrait or photo gift | Cross-stitch |
| Hoop art or a sampler | Cross-stitch |
| A card or bookmark | Cross-stitch |
| A cushion or pillow | Needlepoint |
| A chair seat | Needlepoint |
| Hard-wearing homewares | Needlepoint |
Why are "grandma hobbies" popular again?
The Samford Crimson (21 Oct 2026) and The Charlotte Ledger (24 Oct 2026) describe younger people taking up needlework as a screen-free, social hobby, and House Digest (18 Oct 2025) reported needlepoint pillows coming back as decor. These are a few stories, not market data.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use embroidery floss for needlepoint?
Yes, on finer canvas. DMC lists six-strand floss among the threads for higher-mesh canvas, and thicker threads such as tapestry wool for lower counts.
Is needlepoint the same as tapestry?
People often say "tapestry", but strictly a tapestry is woven on a loom. Needlepoint is stitched on canvas.
Do cross-stitch and needlepoint use the same needle?
Both use a blunt tapestry needle. For needlepoint, the size follows the canvas mesh, and the bigger the number, the finer the needle.
